How to Care for Embroidered Children's Clothing: Keep It Looking Lovely!
Share
When you’ve chosen a personalised embroidered outfit for your little one, it’s not just cute — it’s special. Whether it’s their first birthday top, a newborn gift, or a “big brother” jumper, embroidered children's clothing is made to be treasured (and ideally worn more than once before a snack incident!).
To help keep your little one’s embroidered items looking lovely for as long as possible, here are my tried-and-true tips on how to wash, dry, and care for them — with love and a little extra attention. ✨
1. Turn Inside Out Before Washing
Turning embroidered garments inside out before popping them in the wash helps protect the stitching from getting rubbed or snagged. It also keeps the front looking bright and fresh — especially important for detailed designs or bold thread colours.
2. Wash on a Gentle Cycle (and Keep It Cool!)
A cold wash or low temperature (30°C is perfect) is your best friend for keeping embroidery looking its best. Use a gentle cycle with a mild detergent — nothing too strong or full of bleach.
Avoid fabric softeners too, as they can weaken threads and fade colours over time.
3. Avoid Tumble Drying (Sorry!)
I know it’s tempting (I'm guilty of not practicing what I preach on this one!), but tumble drying can cause embroidery threads to shrink or fray. Instead, lay items flat to dry or hang them out of direct sunlight to protect colours.
4. Iron with Care (Or Not at All!)
If you need to iron the garment, turn it inside out and use a low heat setting. You can also place a thin cloth between the iron and the fabric to protect the embroidery. Most of the time though, a gentle reshape and air drying does the trick.
5. Spot Clean When You Can
For smaller spills or stains, gently spot-clean the area instead of throwing the whole thing in the wash again. A soft cloth and a dab of cool water with mild soap usually does the job.
Bonus Tip: Store with Love
If it’s a keepsake outfit — like a birthday top or custom baby grow — store it in a memory box or clean, dry drawer. Avoid airtight bags (they can trap moisture) and keep it somewhere safe from sunlight and dust.
Why It’s Worth the Extra Care
Each item of embroidered clothing from Phoe & Bee is handmade with love and personalised just for your little one. A little extra TLC in the wash means your stitched memories will last longer — and can even be passed down or tucked into a memory box for years to come.
